You seem to portray an almost utopian future for the Heimishe community (at least Utopian from your prospective). However, you also seem to ignore the mechanics of the Heimishe community. Remember, the community is not shaped by the whims or wishes of individuals or even groups. The “community” itself, which includes ALL its members’ interests, conscious or sub-conscious, acts as an independent entity, with its sole agenda being, maintaining the status quo.

The status quo is being maintained by the very reason that members in the community are able to read (and write) this blog and others like it. By accepting the idea that there are Akiposrsim in the community, but who still “must” wear black garb and run to the Mikvah every now and then, the community is acting like a big loving family, which includes and even embraces its wayward members. (again, perhaps not consciously, but nevertheless, it embraces all.) All this insures the continuity of the status quo.

The reason why the Jewish community went through a major “reassessment” in pre-war Europe (actually more pre-WWI than pre-WWII), was due to outside political, social, and economic factors. Poverty, unrelenting persecution, a general migration to larger cities, and infantile naiveté for new “ideas,” such as communism and Enlightenment. The community didn’t change just because some Bucherim were “having it” with girls, or because some Akiporsim were airing their skeptic minds in the local Mikvah. These changes were part of universal changes that affected the entire continent, its Jews and Gentiles alike.

I’ve seen and listened to others who predict the imminent demise of the Heimishe community and way of life. They predict a world where all kinds of ideas could be aired publicly without fear of retribution; a world of open courtship among the sexes (the “prudes” implying only for the “singles” crowd, while the “hedonists” hoping for the married ones as well); a world where a Rav will have zero authority - basically, a society not unlike any other in the city.

The reality is that in order to change our society the education system needs a full overhaul, and the ingrained “cultural” norms and standards need a full overview (not just by the Apikorsim, but by the Frum as well), something I am not sure that even you are willing to do. You might prefer that your son or daughter acquires a basic general education or does “certain” things, but you might still insist on “keeping” other things, and even if you are ready to go all the way, your friends-in-arms might not.

There is still so much to discuss on this subject, and I don’t have the time for it right now. Just one more thing. Any cultural revolution also needs a cultural elite. Haskalah, Communism, Zionism, all had strong cultural elites that galvanized the movement, something that your “Utopia” is completely lacking (A few individuals here and there don’t make as much as a dent). As long as there will be more Yingeleit frequenting brothels and crowding B-movie theaters instead of crowding Lincoln Center I see little hope for major changes in the community.

Now, I presented my “contrary” thesis. Next time, I’ll write about how I might agree with you.

איינער1 you are so right, Achar states himself that its difficult to forecast the future, this is more a personal wish from apikoros who would really like this to happen and be remembered as one of the revolutionist, keep on dreaming baby

The reason for this is the fact of the shteible a place were every one feels welcome because his friends are there and everyone wants to mingle with friends so you go to a club/beis hamedrish and you shmoooz a whole davening however "vee nisht vee" you answer a amen yhey shmay raba your connected...
