While true that many ignorant people out there claim the absurd oxymoron that God is not "under" logic, it behooves us to acknowledge that most if not all of Jewish Philosphers and thinkers have totally disagreed.
Nisoyen by definition means where one option is less attractive than the other which means that the 'dire' consequence of the 'bad' action is not so obvious. Imagine the first rabble-rouser in Midbar starting to campaign for making the golden calf being struck with immoblizing terrific agony then it strikes the next campaigner then the third, do you really think the Egel campaign would stand a chance?
(It is logically impossible for a person to choose somthing that is not the "chosen" option in his mind think of the absurdity of saying "he chose something that is not chosen according to him" for if he chose it it's obviously chosen by him no?)
You seem like a Talmid Chochom so you should know that Chazal used drama and exaggeration so please interpret accordingly.
Yes, as you mentioned Eilu Veilu, you have made a valid observation (up to a point that is) and so have I. But the one who's point is more valid is the correct one.
It seems you haven't dabbled much in philosophy or you would have been familiar with David Hume's argument of non causation which relates to the point you just made.
In one word, there is absolutely NO logical contradiction in sometihng appearing where there was nothing beforehand with no previous cause. As a matter of fact not only is it logical but it actaully happens constantly in the quantom level where particles transport from point A to point B without traversing the space in between those two points. what with the Multipe Universe Theory where it is theorised that universes are popping into existence just like that Poof... (Hume's point is that there is no reason to believe that any cause and effect we constantly are confronted with is really effected by the cause, there is no logical basis to assume such, is what he claims.)
It is in no way related to the logical contradiction of 2+2=5
Your constant harping about your Rebbe in cheder gives me pause for thought; are you too angry to be reasonable?
Do you expect you Rebbe to explain the concept of logic to a 12 year old etc.? except some very serious intelligent people I wouldn't expect the rebbe himself to know more but dont confidently sneer on a religion that you have learned while 12 years old and have been taught on that level, while using your intellectual capacity of adulthood (i would say you have much more than the average capacity)
Still worse is when someone tries to show you the adult version of the religion based on the accredited sages you push it aside in favor of the 12 year old version
You are smart so you repudiate the babyish version of religion but you don't want the adult/smart version. I don't know why
You should be well aware of the typical response to all questions "inz farshtey mir nisht dey zachen" and it's true, most people aren't made for philosophical discussion but hey if you are ready to tackle the questions you gotta give the answers a chance.
Why do you say that a God who cant go against logic is no God? You already agreed that many of the Jewish sages have been very comfortable with a God that cant be or do illogic, don't all your Rebbes in cheder agree that the Rishonim know better than them and that they are not to well versed with these philosphical issues?
They stayed with the version they were taught in cheder but your not satisfied and rigtfully so. so move on bro.
If malice not integrity is your intent then you're all the same, chasidim and apikorsim but with different wrapping. I sure hope that's not the case.
to become a true apikores you gotta study a lot.
I'm not here to preach and surely not to fight (It was through my raving about your your piece on Avrohom that it ended up being translated in Hebrew and FYI it is translated in english as well, I'll send it to you if you like. It is a masterpiece)
I do think you are dead wrong on many counts.
for one you confuse issues,
dont prove your point by shifting to a different point about who created these many universes, stick to the issue. I highly doubt if you know my position on Judaism in general and on this issue in particular. But even if i would be wrong there doesnt allow you to shift to that issue.
No one's talking about you searching for religion, feel free to search or not to search to your hearts content but when you say "the biggest mistake the fabricators of Jewish religion made" you are representing the Jewish religion and as such you should get it right, and to keep your integrity you should say that you are talking specifcally about the lowest and least intellectual denomination of this religion.
Even this is going too far, as i mentioned previously, enough of the chasidim will abide by what the Rashba holds true. yet i'd concede that on the chasidishe Judaism you have some merit.
I do see you have a very limited knowledge about God, outside the chasdic education and that is why you ask such questions as "if God can only do what is possible then modern technology is like God etc." I can only tell you honestly you just "have" to learn philosophy in order to ask such questions without sounding foolish.
Why in Heavens name (no pun intended) does God have to bound by laws of physics if he is bound by laws of logic again i dont mean to sound offensive but it seems you dont know a darn thing about laws of logic.
Come on answer me truthfully did your read Descartes,Hume, Locke, Kant,? or better yet did you even hear about them?
Please be smarter than talking about a subject you havent learned about.
I dont mean to use any silly scare tactics of you not being smart enough, on the contrary i say you are smart so go ahead and educate yourself on the issue.
I wouldn't say there is any way to prove God's existence (at least in its conventional intepretation) but there is absolutly no logical inconsistency in such a hypothesis
At least if you would go through the bother of trying to listen to what someone else has to say rather than sticking to your unlearned version of things.
I think as Achir said you both agree on more things then you argue on.
Let’s see, we can all agree that the religion that Achir ridicules might not be the true original Jewish religion, the same religion that the Rambam, the Even Ezra and some other Rishonim refer to. I would even go further then that, I think if Moshe Rabeini would come down to Williamsburg he would proclaim it as a “Eir Hanidachas”, and if he would be with his six hundred thousand strong he would wipe us all out.
You have a great point Achir, if the religion that one grew up with doesn’t make sense to him why should he go and look for another religion. By learning those Rishonim one gets a feel as if everything we were taught is BS,
For example this week I saw the Even Ezra explaining why Bosor Be’cholov is Osur says that the original law was only on a Goat in it’s mothers milk, but the Chachomim had Asered everything, because in their days it was quite possible to get milk from one vendor and meat from another vendor not knowing that it comes from the same mother and son. I have no idea according to this where the waiting six hours and all the other baloney came from.
One of the only things that still intrigue me to learn is seeing how we have developed into this religion of ours, it is so different of the Talmudic era, we even have almost nothing in common with the Rishonim.
We became a pitiful sorry bunch of non thinkers. Our nation who have been the front runners of intellectualism and deep thinking have become so compliant, the over used phrase come to mind “Chodosh Osur Min Hatorah.
Ok, enough ranting for toady.
I'll post the english version of Avrohom Avinu in the commments of that article.
You're a nice decent guy, I honestly feel that way about you, thanks for being courteous and writing back.
I wish you would take the time to read what i wrote, you'll see then how inextricably linked the nisoyen issue is with the question of God being bound to logic.
If your not really interested in storied discussions so be it. But broadcasting opinions not based on rigorous research is precisly the crime you decry against Hasidic Pop theology.
Your point about you not wanting to look for a new religion a 'la the Rambam etc. is in my opinion totally convoluted for the following reason;
Hasidic religion and Ramabam religion is one and the same as far as practice (observance) is concerned, they both abide by the Talmud and it's later interpreters.
It's in the philosophical end where you feel the difference but even in that aspect it's not as it seems to be. Take Chabad, things are worked out in a very clear and sensible way, try Adin Steinzalts's work on Chabad. Or on Chasidic theology try Martin Buber or even some more traditional Chasidic Theologians.
You are turned off by the complete lack of thought going on in the typical chasidic circles but that is inevitably due to the fact that the majority of people arent capable or even inclined to philosophise or have "storied discussions".
Keeping the tradition without the philosophy behind it lead one to answer stupid things like your rebbe's answers to you when confronted with the seeming blasphemy of saying that God is bound to logic as if that limits his Ominpotence.
That is the price one pays for not thinking.
You have 2 options on this whole religion thing.
You can continue being religious without thinking and philosophising [this is the option the Hasidim in your community have chosen]
Or you can say I am only ready to practice this religion if it makes sense to me so i'll go against the choice my community made and i'll think this religion through [the Rambam way]
Sure you have a third option of saying I don't want to practice this religion period and I don't need to give you any reason. But then it's not because this religion doesn't make sense.
Don't show incosistencies in the words of people who very clearly proclaim that they dont know what they are talking about (mir farshtien nisht dey zachan) and that they don't want to know.
More so when you yourself also profess somewhat of a similiar view of not being interested in theology.
The statemenst of people not versed in these issues will inevitably be contradictory but they always end their statement saying "what do we know about such things" which is a very honest disclaimer.
You write; being there is no way to physically prove one way or another that tells you that there really no practical difference in our viewpoints. I lost you here,
can you prove that the Nazi ideology of racial genocide is wrong through a physical test tube?
If you feel that we are going in circles here, don't feel obligated to respond, You were courteous as it is and I appreciate it

Someone told me last night about a guy named Nietzsche who said something like this; since there is no G-d, the best way to live is to cheat and steal and overpower everyone that you can. This is why we cannot prove Hitler to be “morally wrong”.
Mr. anonymous, (it would be nice if you can get yourself some sort of a nick)
Is there a difference between “mee’ut ha'machzik es ha’merubah and 2+2=5? I’m asking because I don’t know, obviously I never studied philosophy or math.

I'll get myself a nick (or two!!) one of these days but it's just that I always am in a crazy hurry. I usually intend to write only a line or two but end up writing a gantze megilah.
To my limited knowledge (I'm not the greatest expert in logic either)Miut Hamachzik... is in the same catagory as 2+2=5.
I wrote in one of the comments here that it should be interpreted in the same vein as "a day of rain is greater than the day the torah was given" and for added spice I'll throw in another one, "a cloudy day is as bad as the day the temple was destroyed”. Drama and hyperbole are meant to make things a bit more exciting but not meant to be taken literally.
I know Achar asked where I draw the line on this, and I agree there is no exact formula yet even he will have to agree that when the Posuk says ‘and the fire burned till the “heart of the heaven”’ it shouldn’t be taken literally that there is a heart in the heaven and the fire burned till there [ouch!!] so I’ll throw the onus of demarcation back in Achar’s court, for he is the one that finds it important to have a clear and fixed formula.
Talking of which,
Achar Dear,
If for the sake of this discussion we will assume that logical contradictions can’t occur even through God [and as above it has no implications on his omnipotence], then the Nisoyen question doesn’t hold water [I think].
For if you agree that there is even the smallest reason for nisoyen or pain [the reason being such that the wanted result is logically inseparable from nisoyen, maybe so that a person creates his own destiny rather than being a robot? Or for whatever other reason] then the your question boils down to a matter of degree, less nisoyen and less of the end result the nisoyen is meant to bring, or more of nisoyen and more of that coveted result. Whichever He’ll choose you’ll be able to ask how about the other option.
So you want less nisoyen but He want’s more Nisoyen and more of the result the Nisoyen brings.
You surely agree that seeing sinners dying miserable deaths every day puts a serious damper on the urge to sin, don’t you think? Or what about this most powerful guy telling you personally to listen to him or else.. won’t that give you a strong push to listen up. [the story of Akieda not withstanding]. Even by just making his presence known a lot, he’s tipping the balance immensely.
I’m still very confused as to how we humans operate [I really meant it] so I find it very difficult to relate to questions on how God operates let alone to prove his nonexistence by him not meeting up to your expectation on his modus operandi.
How many things don’t we understand in the human psyche, humans that are very much here with us every moment of our waking life, yet you feel comfortable to claim knowledge on how God should operate coupled with a very strong threat namely if you don’t understand you’ll philosophize him out of existence, and this all from a guy that isn’t much into philosophy.
Don’t get me wrong, I agree that as long as one doesn’t have proof of the existence of something he shouldn’t assume it to exist. So you can rightfully ask what is the proof of God’s existence [well, ahem, only in the simplistic concept of God ] but disproving Him? That’s a tough one; I would stay away from that.
You don’t like ‘all those thousands of philosophers” who philosophized without the advantage of empirical trial and error, How about not doing it yourself.
Keep it simple friend, you don’t have proof of His existence fair enough, don’t start philosophizing proofs of his nonexistence, you’ll get caught someplace.
About you not changing an iota from your relegion, pulleese, you know that you'll be mechallel shabos on a Rambam jew, stop taking extremist hyperbole literally even they would be metzaruf a Rambam jew to minyan [most of them anyway]
As smart as chasidim are they just wont know stuff which they dont think about, so in that aspect they dont know what they are talking about.
So you subscribe to the school of moral/ethical relativists
And the only reason you opened a blog because you were enraged at chasidim for not happening to like the same things you do, you would've possibly created a blog to vent your rage against people liking vanilla ice cream while you hate it.
I don't believe you, your just not that stupid.
Forget about God, you yourself surley cant believe something and not believe it simultanously
Moral relativism requires you not to crusade for ANYTHING.
You cant logically be angry at someone doing something he likes if thats the only thing you go by too.

Do you really doubt that there is a literary tool of drama, or hyperbole?
Do you really doubt that the Talmud has claimed that even the Torah uses it "dibrah torah beloshen havoi"?
Do you really doubt that the Talmud would be averse of using a tool they readily attributed to the their most holy book?
If not, which I believe is the case, why quibble if "heart" is a form of speech borrowed from the "real heart" So as to add some literary spice or it's original meaning is 'center blah blah..?
I can't believe that you really understood me as undermining the Akeida.
Do you or don’t you agree that by having God Himself command something it has a VERY large impact.
Do you really think that believers in the Akeida simply discount this fact?
Maybe the akeida is great because he was one single individual fighting the whole world, a world that claimed prophecy just as much as he.
When your only son is on the line you start thinking a lot. [Did I write "your" only son? Oy Vey, now you're going to quibble about you not being Avrohom Avinu huh? Or you do understand the meaning of words by their context? This leads me to my next point]
I realized right after posting that i should have written "the Chasidim would be mechalel shabbos on a Rambam yid..." I didn’t mean ‘you’ as should be evident from the context. But it's definitely a good enough point for you to quibble about hmmm.
My oh my I actually had the gall to forget for one millisecond that your are the acclaimed apikores. Is that a degree of some sort or an honorary title?
The truth to be said, I didn't, whenever I write "right, rightfully," I mean 'logically correct, logically right is in the "right" answer to a mathematical/logical question. Not ___ forbid in a moral sense.
Besides, many atheists do believe in right and wrong.
People do stupid things every day. To rail against the power plants because they pollute the air while smoking cigarettes in a room full of people (a much more proven pollutant) is stupid although it actually happened.
A Chasid mocking the naivety of the Hindu religion while being just as naive himself is stupid, yet it happens, doesn't it? Ditto for Christians vs. Moslems etc. etc.
I didn't say it's impossible to do stupid illogical things, I just said that being angry at someone for doing something you are doing that very same moment is as stupid as the above examples.
If you're comfortable acting stupid, not making sense, doing illogical things, good for you. I happen to think that it's not the case as I honestly think you're a decent thinker albeit a very angry one, hence prone to logical fallacies.
Ya know, every once in a while it might be worth to listen and try to understand rather than just fight. One might actually end up gaining some very important knowledge in the process.
I know, I know, I should stop preaching (you'd die of laughter when you'd know me a bit. You'd just see how utterly comical it is to suspect me of preaching) I don't mean to preach at all. It just is a given that we both "like" the truth so I'm giving you me version of it and trying to show where you got it WRONG (in a logical sense)

I will stop to try to be cute, I will also try to use simple language rather than fancy words, I will try to stick to the core issue, I will try to see where we agree and what point we disagree. If you will also do the same then maybe in the end this discussion can be worthwhile
The only rule of logic that I abide by is that there can’t be contradictions.
By asking to create a world where there is nisoyen yet without the elements of what the concept of nisoyen is comprised of, is asking of God; I want a soda bottle but I don’t want it to be a bottle. It’s a contradiction, you are not asking anything, do you or don’t you want this soda bottle? You may say you want ‘soda’ without a bottle, but if you want a ‘soda bottle’ it’s gotta be a bottle because that’s what you’re asking, The meaning of soda-bottle has to be fulfilled in order for your request to be fulfilled.
Bottom line, you’re contradicting yourself when asking for a soda bottle but without a bottle. You are in essence not asking for anything, one half of your request voids the other half.
As with soda-bottle so with nisoyen, Soda bottle MEANS 1- a bottle, 2-that’s used for soda. And you can’t get less then it’s full meaning.
Nisoyen MEANS being confronted with a choice where one option is to lose out personally but do the morally correct thing, and the other option is to gain personally but to be morally wrong.
If by both options you are confronted with you have no personal gain then it’s not nisoyen, period.
Big nisoyen MEANS that the morally wrong choice is very very gainful to you. Small nisoyen MEANS that the morally wrong option is not sooo gainful.
And the lesser you see gain in one option, the less nisoyen it is, period.
Eating up your neighbors food may be a nisoyen but if the CCTV is blinking in front of your eyes and recording every move of yours and you know your neighbor is going to see it and he will beat you up for it then you hardly see a personal gain in any option because you very clearly see the personal loss involved. So by definition i.e. by it’s meaning it becomes a small nisoyen
So by being sure of God’s existence the nisoyen becomes much smaller inevitably, it can’t be changed.
So if God wants a certain level of nisoyen He can only show Himself up to that level.
You can ask why God wants this whole Nisoyen thing in the first place, but let’s first see if we agree on what I wrote here in this article up to this point, namely that if He wants a certain level of nisoyen then there is no choice other than him not showing himself according to that level.
Nisoyen MEANS being confronted with a choice where one option is to lose out personally but do the morally correct thing, and the other option is to gain personally but to be morally wrong
- און -
Big nisoyen MEANS that the morally wrong choice is very very gainful to you.

If the neigbor seeing me eat his food will reward me for it. Then his seeing it will give more reason to eat not less. But that is simply changing the story.
I agree that if God is not potent or doesn't care at all if you do good or evil then seeing him won't change anything.
By God I mean a rewarder of good and punisher of evil.
That kind of God changes the level of nisoyen according to the level of us seeing him.

Do you agree that the above statement is a logical certainty, as certain as 2 + 2 = 4? If not, let’s focus on this single issue.
My opinion; 2+2 is 4 because 2 and 2 means 4, you’re just using different language to describe the same thing in reality you’re saying “2 and 2 is 2 and 2”
Level of Nisoyen means level of awareness of the consequence of your action.
2) Do you agree that the logical truth of 2+2=4 will inevitably stay true in all possible worlds that an Omnipotent Entity can create?
My opinion; A ‘soda bottle’ will be a bottle in any possible world, because a ‘soda bottle’ means bottle. 2 and 2 is 2 and 2 in any possible world.
I’m trying to eliminate all side issues so if you can answer me if you agree or disagree on the above 2 points it will help us both a lot. If you agree to a point but not to "my opinion" on it, please be so kind and specify, Thanks.
The level of Nisoyen does not have to change according to the level of the "testee" being aware (rightly or wrongly) that he's being watched by an Omnipotent Rewarder for good and evil.
Do you agree that the above statement is a logical certainty, as certain as 2 + 2 = 4? If not, let's focus on this single issue.

I know you can answer me cutely on the above and we can go on and on playing word games. But if we are interested in productivity i would say let's give everybody due respect and let's at least harbor a suspicion that the other party can be correct.
for the above mentioned reason, namely, that we seem not to get each others point i thought it prudent to focus on one single issue, to clarify on that single issue if we agree to it or not.
You see, being that my points and my opinions summarized above seems to me so obviously true, emphasis on the word seems, i keep on suspecting that maybe you also would agree to those points, and that there is something else that you mean to argue.
Hence the reason for asking the simple questions above.
Can you please do me a favor and just tell me precisely, without being cute, what your opinion is on the above 2 points.
I know that by asking the questions i havent really explained my position it was more about clarifying if you really think that
A, that there is a possible world where 2 can be 2 and also not be 2 simultanously
B, can it be that a testee's level of awareness as to the disparity of the consequence of his actions changes yet the level of the nisoyen doesnt change
Please don't act like the Yeshiva guy in the other blog

Believing that God is not under logic’s rule is not oxymoronic. William of Occam, a very keen logician (the Scholastic philosopher of Occam’s razor fame), thought (and taught) that to tie God to the rules of logic is to deny Him free will, a point that’s eminently logical.
The Rishonim of the French and Ashkenazi schools (what made you include the Ra’avad and Rashba among the rationalists?) would’ve thought it blasphemous to deny Him the ability to do anything. Rabenu Shimshon (to quote one example), in his commentary on Mishna Kilayim (chapter 5), denies the Pythagorean theorem (except for one special case) because this is what the Mishna’s wording suggests. Rambam, of course, would’ve countered that not even God can invalidate the grand theorem.
Please reread Hume. He doesn’t deny causality, as doing so in his day would’ve been absurd. What he does is to question the basis of what we call common sense. Suppose that two phenomena, A and B, always occur together and that, further, A always precedes B. Science, and any practical man for that matter, would conclude that A is the cause of B, and that what sends you flying is the vigorous kick I’d given you. Not necessarily, says Hume. It is conceivable that there’s a third factor C, as of yet undiscovered, that is the real cause of B. That A always precedes B is immaterial; it may be that C, which is causally unconnected to A, always triggers B whenever A occurs. It’s possible that I am innocent, that the real agency that sends you flying is angel Gabriel, who does so whenever I kick you because this is how the good angel wants it but which may change when his mood changes. (One must be careful here, as Hume didn’t believe in angel Gabriel.) This is the gist of Hume’s argument. Clearly, Hume does not deny cause and effect, or even doubt them. But it did earn him the title “King of the Skeptics.”
You appeal to quantum physics. It’s true that quantum theory postulates that particles pop in and out of existence. But physics also holds inviolable the laws of thermodynamics in which energy (and mass) cannot be created or destroyed, and upholds Achar’s inequality that 1 does not equal 0. The only possible conclusion here is that we nonspecialists in quantum theory have no right to invoke it. (Something appearing out of nothing, is it really not illogical? This is what you keep on saying.)
I didn’t follow your “nisoyen” reasoning, or why you believe there’s more to ethics than mere Aristotelian pragmatics (i.e., that ethics is a mere code of conduct whose sole purpose is to guide man through life with the least pains). Right and wrong (so you had told me) can be objectively proved but how to do so you cannot presently formulate in words. Your writing here bears this out, so why mention it?
A line commonly repeated is that to become an apikores “you gotta study a lot.” Not true! The case against religion, any religion, is simple and decisive, which I need not repeat since many of our Yiddish bloggists have done it well. To see its force, though, demands one difficult proviso: the unshackling of the psychological fetters that childhood indoctrination had imposed. For most people this is impossible. (Avid readers of The Science Times will remember a recent article that reported evidence for the existence of a “religious” gene, which locks the mind against any logic that argues against indoctrinated lore. As it goes with genes, this gene expresses itself differently in different people, ranging across a continuum from the apikores minimum to the ultra-tzaddik maximum. While many dispute the evidence for such a gene, observers of the human scene have long felt that biology must be a big factor in the belief equation.) Item of interest: Rambam, who labored to prove God’s existence, left religion unproved, and satisfied himself by showing (Moreh, Part III) that Judaism’s percepts do not counter Aristotelian logic. Thomas Aquinas, the great Christian savant, did the same for Christianity and openly admitted that religion cannot be proved. The only offered proof (easily refuted) that I can remember is that of R. Judah Halevi’s well-known “Ein odom moirish shekker l’bonov.” I should add that Ramban in his Commentary mentions this proof twice without mentioning Halevi, though he mentions him and his Kuzari elsewhere in his works.
You cannot accept that free will is a fiction. But this has been the raison d’etre of the empiric philosophers ever since John Locke pointed his finger to it. (His arguments are irrefutable.) With the advent of brain-imaging technology the subject has matured, graduating from armchair speculation to experimental proof. We now know that decision-making happens not in the conscious mind but in the unconscious, that we become aware of decision-making when the decision has already been made. Suppose you catch sight of a snake slithering out of the brushwood. You freeze, raise your arms, and belt out an ear-splitting “Aaah!” The brain signal that triggered your panic had been dispatched BEFORE the snake entered your awareness. In other words, awareness is a mere motion picture replaying past events with no input to the events. The implication is clear: our conscious self affects decision-making as much as a film affects the past events it depicts. Free will is a fiction, and we’re robotic animals. But we are different than other animals. We are the only species that feels it has free will.
I value your company and hope you don’t take it amiss that I’m not in your corner. To merely say Amen contrary to conviction would’ve been dishonest. It would also have been lacking the spice that goes with vigorous discussion.
Gut Shabbos
I will go wherever truth leads so please don’t mind my disagreeing with you.
I don’t really go that much for name-dropping, if you can explain why a sentence that negates itself internally, the first half voiding the second half is not considered oxymoronic, fine and dandy, otherwise I’ll just have some impure thoughts on mighty William. Maybe even use his own razor to cut him out.
The Rashaba says so clearly in a Teshuva I’m 100% on that, saw it myself inside. He is the one that gives the example of the Alochson being inevitably longer than the Ribia.
The Ravad I referred to is the Baal Emunah Ramah who actually negates God’s knowing beforehand the decisions of man. He claims that it is a logical impossibility.
The Maasey Hashem and the Ralbag concur. See Ohr Sameach on Rambam on his famous piece on bechira.
As to R’ Shimshon, gotta look it up, but it seems that he simply thought that it’s not proven, not that the Mishna also has the capability to counter logic. See Gemara sukkoh on pi where the gemara says that Rabanan D’kisri had it wrong.
I don’t see it in any way that R’ Shimshon claims that the mishna has the power of going against logic. He just believed that the mishna probably had a better way of figuring it out etc.
I respectfully disagree with your interpretation of Hume.
His point seems to be that the fact that the last million times B happened after A does not mean that one caused the other. Now once we realize that there is no reason to see it connected then the whole commonplace assumption that everything is caused by something else is an illusion.
Think about it, there is no logical reason that there should be non-existence rather than existence. It’s only something we are maybe not used to. You are using wrong terminology, it’s not something OUT OF NOTHING, which is absurd, it’s something period, it’s just here, and pray tell me what you have against it.
I think that the Multiple Universe Theory claims just that, universes just pop up.
Illogical means contradictory, what’s contradictory about something existing period?
When testing someone if he will choose pleasure or ethics, if you minimize the pleasure you inevitably changed his test. This is true regardless of what his reasoning for ethics is.
I want to test my child if he looks out for long term or only for what he sees in front of his eyes. By me portraying the long-term effect very graphically I have put the long-term effect closer to his eyes, and I have not tested him on the case where the long-term effect is farther away.
It’s like going to an eye doctor to test his vision from afar; according to how far it is so will you have tested him. It’s illogical to say, I’ll change the position but I want the test not to change, you’re contradicting yourself.
I’m not talking about belief for the sake of belief. I just said that if he wants to represent say the Indian Culture he’ll have to study a lot to know what they really say.
More so when he’s dabbling in philosophical issues.
Take for example the crazy story with the wigs, if someone want to know if the Hindu Religion considers it a sacrifice, it would be foolish of him to ask anyone off the street, certainly if that person tells him very clearly I DON’T REALLY KNOW. The rebbes in Cheder who taught him keep on saying MIR VYSEN NISHT DE ZACHEN, we don’t study these things etc.
If a person opposes a certain belief we should presuppose that he know that specific belief well enough. By Achar being exposed to ignorant people he has not had the chance to listen to what knowledgeable people of that religion are saying.
I’m not about claiming obligations to believe, I’m about discussing issues intelligently. The more one knows the subject matter the more productive the discussion.
Who cares what he, you, or I were taught in Cheder we are talking about a religion called Judaism, are we not?
When one says simply he doesn’t believe so and so because he doesn’t have enough proof, fine and well. But if he starts claiming contradictions in philosophical issues of God’s Omnipotence according to Jewish religion, well that’s a different story.
I don’t think I wrote a position on free will. I am just not sure it’s a fiction. Your aversion to it is I think again based on you seeing cause-and-effect as a logical certainty, while I don’t think it strange if I can do something for no prior reason.
If my memory serves me well, Spinoza too uses the example of the philosophers-ass, when two bundles of hay are in front of him and this ass has no reason whatsoever on choosing one over the other, according to Spinoza that ass will simply die of hunger, I am not sure, it seems to me very likely that part of the capacity of conscious life is that of acting out, throwing out a decision based on nothing. I know that it is again something happening, something existing without a cause, but I don’t have a problem with that.
Come now, don’t we all know about reflexive acts? Where we don’t think about it consciously. Every step I take there were dozens of reflexive acts, wow.
We are talking about conscious decision bro, in cases were reflex didn’t call the shot.
Not in my corner? Heck, my most fervent wish is to find people that win me in discussions. Otherwise the discussion was not productive for me, what do I gain by knowing the same I knew before I started?
The fact that you have sided with Achar on many of the issues, put me at ease.
I was very upset at what seemed to me blatant prejudice against God Religion etc. Which to me was unfortunate because I very much respect his honesty in not following things blindly, coupled with him having a very keen mind. And I abhor prejudiced people, more so when they proclaim honesty.
Seeing now that you agree with him, has shown me that intellectually honest people can have these positions, although I still think them very obviously mistaken.
Thanks for your input
Long, boring, and not much on spice, sorry
